The Mature View: An insight into the viewing habits of the over 60s

A study by Handicare that asked over 500 over 60s has delved into the viewing habits of older people by asking a series of questions about their favourite TV shows, streaming services and more. The research found that BBC iPlayer is the most popular streaming services, followed by ITV Player, 4OD and Netflix.
In terms of TV series it is unsurprising that Downton Abbey was the most popular, but 26% of respondents revealed that they watch Game of Thrones and 17.2% watch Breaking Bad.
Reality TV shows are a popular form of entertainment for older people and Strictly Come Dancing (58.6%) was seen as the most popular programme, followed by Britain’s Got Talent (48.4%) and The X Factor (38.8%). Big Brother (19.2%), The Only Way is Essex (6%) and Love Island (4.4%) are also watched by over-60s.
The Handicare study also found that “no interest in the subject matter” (84.6%) is the main reason older people turn off their TV, while unclear dialogue (36.6%) and bad language (20.8%) were also major turn offs for over-60s.
