18 Things You Never Knew About Rhinoplasty

As one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the country, it is important for patients considering rhinoplasty to educate themselves in advance and choose a trusted surgeon with proven education, training, experience, and patient satisfaction. We consulted the experts from the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery for “Nose Surgery 101” and an accompanying infographic which depicts dozens of facts you never knew about rhinoplasty. Here are a handful of our favorites:

  • The “rhino” in rhinoplasty has nothing to do with a rhinoceros. The word rhinoplasty actually comes from two Greek words: “rhino” meaning “nose” and “plasticos”, meaning “to shape”.
  • Of rhinoplasty patients in 2018, 84% were women and 16% were men. In addition, people between the ages of 19-34 accounted for around half of all nasal surgeries.
  • People receive rhinoplasty not only for aesthetic reasons. Functional rhinoplasty patients are interested in alleviating symptoms that result from nasal passage obstructions and other anatomical hindrances such as a deviated septum, inferior turbinate hypertophy, or collapsed nasal valves.
  • Complementary aesthetic procedures such as chin augmentation, eye rejuvenation, and neck contouring are often performed in unison with rhinoplasty to achieve complete facial balance and a more streamlined intake and recovery process.
