5 Common Swimming Pool Repairs Home Owners’ Experience

If you’re a homeowner with a swimming pool, there’s a good chance you’ll experience some repairs at some point. Swimming pools are complex systems that can be finicky, and sometimes things go wrong. Many homeowners are surprised that many repairs can be done by themselves, while others are not.

For example, pool leaks are often the result of a simple fix using a pipe fitting or sealant. However, if fixing a pool leak doesn’t work, only a professional can help. When it comes to pool repair, it’s important to know what you can do and when you should call a professional.

Here are five common pool repairs homeowners experience.

1. Cracks in the Pool Waterline

This is one of the most common problems homeowners experience. If a pool has a waterline system, there’s a good chance that this will happen to you. Waterlines can be damaged by even the smallest objects and often appear like cracks in the cement.

However, if these cracks are small, drinking from the pool is not advised as it could lead to health problems. Some homeowners cover their waterlines with grout to prevent additional damage. Several types of sealants are sold at most DIY stores, including cement sealant, plaster sealant, and grout sealant. By filling the cracks with one of these sealants, you can effectively prevent the water from escaping.

2. Pool Pump Repair

Most people don’t think about this, but swimming pools have a lot of moving parts. If one is broken or worn out, it could impact the performance and quality of your pool. For example, if your pump is worn out or has a cracked impeller, you must replace it as soon as possible. If this happens you will want to contact a professional pool service company to come out and take a look at it.

Replacement pumps are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Additionally, if you have a pool cover, you can often get your pump serviced by the cover manufacturer, as they are also responsible for the pump. A study released by the American Association of Swimming Pool Constructors (AASPC) found that the failure rate for pool pumps was about two to 10 percent, but the actual number of pumps is unknown.

3. Pool Filter Repair

If you’re using a pool filter, it’s essential to ensure you’re using the correct type. Pool filters can vary in size, shape, and material. For example, some are made of metal mesh, and others are built around a heavy-duty bag. If your pool has a metal mesh filter, it might be time for a replacement or repair.

Homeowners often prefer metal mesh filters because they’re more durable and effective but can be harder to clean. To make pool cleaning easier, some models come equipped with a stainless steel grid to help capture debris and small particles. In addition, metal mesh pools are usually much quieter than other types of filters.

4. Diving Board Repairs

This is another common problem for homeowners. Diving boards are the most commonly damaged type of equipment on pools. This is due to their high placement and low placement, which is often the top of the pool. Because they’re hard to reach and there’s little space to work with, many diving boards require repairs. Most can be repaired easily by attaching a new piece of metal or stone.

However, if you notice any cracks in your metal board, it might need a pool service. You can install a steel plate under the board on top of concrete pavers or cement to do this. Another alternative to repairing your diving board is to install a net under the pool and above the diving board. This will catch people who fall into the swimming pool.

5. Algae Smell in the Pool

This can be a problem in many swimming pools. It’s caused by excess fertilizer and a lack of circulation. To fix this, turn off all the spigots above the pool. Next, increase circulation by turning off the filter and moving it to different spots in your pool so it can circulate more water. This is especially important if you have an above-ground pool as it’s much harder to regulate water temperature and circulation without a filter. Also, install an ultraviolet light to control algae in the water.

These are just five common pool repairs, but there are many other things a pool can suffer from. If you notice anything wrong with your pool, act immediately. This could allow you to fix the problem yourself or prevent it from getting worse.
