How DDoS Attacks Have Changed from 2011 to 2012

When DDoS attacks hit a business they not only disrupt the business, but distributed denial of service attacks can leave a lasting legacy of damage and destruction.

Malicious people or entities launch DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks in an attempt to take down a network. Their attack may make an entire system unavailable including websites, email, voicemail, and more. The purpose of the DDoS attack is to render a system useless by making it unresponsive or very slow.
In the last year, the nature of the DDoS attacks has shifted;they are more intense and disruptive every year. The infographic below, Global DDoS Attack Key Metrics, lays out how DDoS attacks have changed during 2011 and 2012.
The infographic shows us that:

  • There was a substantial increase in DDoS attacks between 2011 and 2012.
  • Infrastructure DDoS attacks increased slightly more than application layer DDoS attacks.
  • As the number of attacks grew, the average time per attack slightly decreased.
  • Average bits per second and average packets per second during attacks rose sharply.

The infographic was created by the marketing and design team of one of the global leaders in DDoS protection and mitigation.
