Opioid Addiction Treatment

We are already used to the news reports about celebrities struggling with addiction or overdosing on prescription medications. But it is not mentioned so often that 46 Americans die each day from overdoses involving prescription opioids.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include powerful prescription painkillers, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, tramadol, morphine, and fentanyl. Health care providers use the Guideline provided by the CDC. It has recommendations on the appropriate prescribing of opioid-based pain relievers.

Still, the risks of abuse and addiction exist. AddictionResource authors explain that they become much higher when a user misuses the medication by increasing a dose, taking it more often, using it in a way other than directed (snorting or injecting), or mixing it with other substances. If someone has constant or powerful urges to use opioids, it’s a clear sign that medical assistance is necessary.
