Should You Get Tested for Osteoporosis?

March 2, 2016

If you’re someone who suffers from Osteoporosis, you should be regularly tested for bone density loss. After having this test done, you receive a score referred to as the “T-Score.” The T-Score compares your bone density to that of a healthy 30-year-old. The lower the T-Score, the lower your bone density. If you have a T-Score of -1.0 or above, you have normal bone density and require no medication. However, if you have a T-Score of -1.0 to -2.5, you are considered to have low bone density and medication should be considered if you have other risk factors that could contribute to your risk of Osteoporosis. A T-Score of -2.5 or below indicates that you have Osteoporosis and medication is recommended for treatment. The good news is that Osteoporosis can be treated, and medication can reduce your risk of fractures as much as 70%.
