Citalopram Side Effects

Citalopram (available under the brand name Celexa) is a prescription drug used to treat depression. Like any other antidepressant, it can cause side effects. The infographic below includes the most common ones.
You may not feel any side effects at all. 21% of users reported gastrointestinal disorders, 15% – insomnia, and 11% – sweating. Other symptoms were quite rare. If you do feel some uncomfortable effects and don’t want to wait until they fade (they last a couple of days or weeks as your body adjusts to Citalopram), you can try to cope with them. AddictionResource authors give a few recommendations.
For example, if you are unable to sleep, take Celexa first thing in the morning. And vice versa, if you feel sleepy throughout the day, take the drug in the evening. If this doesn’t help, talk to your doctor.
If you have gastrointestinal problems, take your antidepressant with food, eat small frequent meals, and drink plenty of fluids (especially water). An antacid or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) can help.
One side effect people find difficult to cope with is sexual dysfunction. If you notice your sex life has tanked, talk to your doctor. You may need either to decrease the dosage or choose another medication.
